How we build a small deck in a single day.
A one-day build isn't rushed — it's planned to the hour. Most of the work happens before we even turn up. Here's exactly what goes on, and why it means a better result for you.
First: the pre-work you don't see
The reason we can build in a day is that the thinking, measuring and buying is all done first. By build morning, there are no decisions left to make — just building.
1 · Design locked in
We agree the size, layout, decking and finish with you up front — and you see it drawn to scale before anything is ordered.
2 · Materials sorted
Every board, pile, bearer and box of fixings is measured off a cut list and picked up in advance, so nothing holds the day up.
3 · Foundations planned
Pile positions and heights are worked out to NZS 3604 beforehand, so the frame goes down fast and dead level.
4 · Site & access checked
We confirm access, ground, services and the finished height with you, so there are no surprises on the morning.
5 · The details agreed
Fixings, edge style (like a picture-frame border), stain and finish are all decided with you before the day.
6 · Loaded the night before
Timber and gear are loaded and ready, so we're on the tools from the moment we arrive — not at the yard.
The build day — hour by hour
A time-blocked ~14-hour day. Every block has a job and a finish line, which is how a whole deck gets done start-to-finish without cutting corners.
Arrive & set out
Unload, protect the site and mark out the deck exactly. Get it dead accurate now — everything else follows these lines.
Foundations in
Piles set and levelled — Nurajack pedestals or timber piles in concrete, depending on the site. Planned and set out first, so the frame goes straight on top.
Bearers & joists
The structural frame goes down and gets squared and levelled. This is the bit that makes a deck last — we take the time here.
Frame checked
Every fixing, hanger and level double-checked before a single board goes on. Catch anything now, not after it's covered.
Lunch & materials check
Quick break, and we lay out the decking run. A planned board layout means no ugly joins.
Decking goes down
Boards fixed with consistent gaps and the right screws for the timber. The part you see every day — done neat and straight.
Edges & fascia
Fascia and the picture-frame border if you've chosen one. The finishing touches that make it look built-in, not bolted on.
Final fix & sand
Last fixings in, sharp edges eased, everything gone over. Safe underfoot and nice to the touch.
Clean up & walkthrough
Offcuts and rubbish taken away, site left tidy, and we walk the finished deck with you. You start and end the day with a clean yard — and a deck you can use tonight.
