Deck restoration

Does your deck look terrible?

Gone grey and splintery? Boards splitting, nails popping, a step that moves when you stand on it? You might not need a new deck — a lot of tired decks just need bringing back to life. We'll tell you honestly which yours needs.

Sound familiar?

  • ✓ It's turned silvery-grey and rough to walk on barefoot
  • ✓ Boards are cupping, splitting or lifting at the ends
  • ✓ Screws or nails have popped up and catch your feet
  • ✓ A board or two is soft, cracked or clearly rotten
  • ✓ The steps or handrail feel loose or wobbly
  • ✓ It just looks tired and drags the whole backyard down

Most of this is fixable — often for a fraction of a full rebuild.

What a restoration involves

1

Assess & secure

Check the frame, piles and fixings, and make sure it's structurally sound and safe.

2

Repair & replace

Swap out split, rotten or cupped boards, re-fix loose ones, and firm up wobbly steps and rails.

3

Clean & sand

Strip back the grey, wash off mould and mildew, and sand it smooth and splinter-free.

4

Stain & protect

Fresh oil or stain to bring back the colour and protect it against the Auckland weather.

Restore or rebuild?

We'll always give you the honest answer — sometimes a restore is money well spent, sometimes you're better off starting fresh.

Restore makes sense when…

The frame, bearers and piles are still solid, and it's mainly the surface boards and finish that have had it. Great value, quick turnaround, and it looks brand new.

Rebuild is smarter when…

The structure underneath is rotten or undersized, the layout no longer suits you, or you'd be spending good money patching a deck that's near the end. Then our 24 Hour Deck is the better call.
